BATU KAWAN, November 6 – In proactive anticipation of the approaching Northeast Monsoon season, Penang has mobilized a significant contingent of 1,699 firefighters and rescuers to mitigate potential flooding and landslide incidents across the state. This strategic deployment underscores a commitment to safeguarding communities and minimizing the impact of adverse weather conditions.
Mohamad Shoki Hamzah, Director of the State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), emphasized that focused attention is being directed toward 53 locations identified as highly susceptible to flooding, as well as six areas recognized as being at elevated risk for landslides. These first responders are prepared for immediate deployment on a 24/7 basis, ensuring a swift and effective response during emergencies.
During the Community Fire Brigade Boat Handover Ceremony and Fire Asset Inspection, Director Hamzah affirmed the department\'s readiness, stating, "We are maintaining our established posts and will strategically deploy resources to vulnerable areas as the rainy season progresses. Historical data indicates that the monsoon season brings not only floods but also ancillary emergencies such as fallen trees and landslides, as evidenced in Balik Pulau last year."
The ceremony featured the formal handover of 10 boats, valued at RM120,000, to 10 Community Fire Brigade teams operating within Penang’s flood-vulnerable zones. This equipment upgrade is designed to augment the response capabilities of local teams, enabling them to provide more effective assistance to affected communities.
Jason H\'ng Mooi Lye, the Local Government and Town and Country Planning Exco, explained that the selection of Community Fire Brigade teams was predicated on empirical data derived from previous flood incidents and the locations of Temporary Evacuation Centers (PPS). "Our preparations are specifically oriented toward the anticipated monsoon season later this year. The selected Community Fire Brigades are strategically positioned in areas with a demonstrated history of flood risk, including those that have previously served as PPS," H\'ng noted.
Complementing these immediate response measures, H'ng also announced that 14 major flood mitigation projects are currently in progress throughout Penang, signaling a sustained commitment to diminishing the state's vulnerability to flooding. These projects encompass enhancements to drainage infrastructure and the implementation of other infrastructural improvements designed to provide enhanced protection for Penang's communities.
