Major Chocolate Brands Linked to Deforestation in Liberia, Claims Report

Maahgeshan 26Nov

A new report by NGO Global Witness alleges that some of the world\'s most recognizable chocolate brands are potentially linked to deforestation within Liberia's rainforest, despite numerous sustainability claims made by these companies. The research, published on Tuesday, asserts that corporate giants including Hershey, Mondelez (Cadbury), Nestle, Unilever, and Mars are implicated in the environmental damage.

According to Global Witness investigator Charlie Hammans, "Big brands are buying untraceable bulk cocoa that hides a massive deforestation footprint " This lack of traceability obscures the true environmental impact of their cocoa sourcing practices.Liberia is home to the largest remaining stretch of the Upper Guinean rainforest, a critical habitat for multiple endangered species, including chimpanzees and forest elephants.

The report highlights that between 2021 and 2024, Liberia lost approximately 250,000 hectares (618,000 acres) of forest in its largest cocoa-producing counties, an area known as the "cocoa belt."The findings raise serious questions about the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives within the chocolate industry and the transparency of cocoa supply chains. Global Witness is calling for greater accountability and traceability to protect Liberia's rainforest and its endangered species.
