Ronaldo Cleared to Play in 2026 World Cup Opener After FIFA Suspends Part of Ban

Lisbon: Cristiano Ronaldo is eligible to play in Portugal's opening match of the 2026 World Cup after FIFA partially suspended his ban following a red card incident.The 40-year-old forward was sent off during Portugal's 2-0 defeat in Dublin earlier this month for elbowing Dara O'Shea, marking his first dismissal in 226 international appearances.

 

FIFA initially imposed a three-match suspension, but two of those matches have been deferred, with the remaining match already served when Portugal secured their qualification for next summer's tournament by defeating Armenia."In accordance with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the remaining two-match suspension has been suspended under a probationary period of one year," FIFA stated in a release to AFP.

 

The statement continued, "Should Cristiano Ronaldo commit another offense of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension will be immediately enforced, and the remaining two matches must be served in the next official (Portugal) matches."Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in men's international football with 143 goals, aims to participate in his sixth World Cup next year in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

 

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker, currently playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has yet to win a World Cup trophy but led his nation to victory at Euro 2016.Ronaldo also attended a dinner at the White House last week, where he met with U.S. President Donald Trump The World Cup group stage draw is scheduled for December 5.
