News By MAAHGESHAN

Veteran Tamil cinema personality K Bhagyaraj has officially announced his return to film direction after a long hiatus, revealing the news at events marking his golden jubilee in the industry and his 72nd birthday. Addressing the press, he reflected on his remarkable journey, which began with a small cameo as a junior artist in Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile, and has since spanned over five decades with more than 75 acting credits and 20 directorial ventures to his name.

Bhagyaraj shared personal anecdotes from his early career, including a memorable incident during the filming of Kizhakke Pogum Rail, where he took on the task of pulling a donkey after the assigned person failed to deliver as expected. While fans later playfully teased him about the scene, he credited his mother’s encouragement to seek roles with stronger screen presence as a key factor in his growth as an actor and collaborator.

The multifaceted talent also spoke about unique experiences that have shaped his craft, recalling how certain lines he wrote in scripts preceded personal tragedies, leading him to develop a deeper, more reflective approach to storytelling.

Making his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979 – a film in which he also starred – Bhagyaraj has established himself as one of Tamil cinema’s most respected figures. His last directorial project was Siddhu +2 in 2010, which featured his son Shanthnu in the lead role. In recent years, he has remained active in acting, with a supporting part in the upcoming 2025 film Kuberaa starring Dhanush.

On his upcoming work, Bhagyaraj confirmed that discussions are already in progress for him to helm both a new feature film and a web series this year, stating that he is approaching this new creative phase with renewed enthusiasm.

His return to directing marks a significant milestone for the enduring figure of Tamil cinema, as he combines decades of industry experience with a willingness to embrace modern formats and connect with new audiences.
