Penang Mutiara LRT Line Reaches Key Milestone as Casting Yard Nears Completion

NewsBy Maahgeshan

KULIM, 4 April 2026 – The Penang Mutiara Line LRT project has achieved a significant infrastructure milestone with the Segmental Box Girder (SBG) casting yard in Sungai Ular reaching 90% completion. The facility is set to begin full-scale production to support the construction of the state’s inaugural light rail transit system.

The 38-acre site in Kulim serves as a critical hub for the fabrication of elevated guideway segments. During an official site inspection this morning, Penang Chief Minister Tuan Chow Kon Yeow expressed confidence in the project’s momentum as it transitions into its next major phase.

“The steady progress we are witnessing, particularly with the casting yard nearing completion, is highly encouraging,” said the Chief Minister. “This facility is an essential component in ensuring the project remains on track for its targeted commencement of operations in 2031.”

The Chief Minister also acknowledged that as construction activities intensify along the 23.7-kilometre alignment from Silicon Island to Komtar, there will be localized traffic impacts. He appealed for public patience and thanked government agencies for the coordination required to maintain the project’s timeline.

The casting yard supports the Civil Main Contractor 1 (CMC1) package, which was awarded to SRS LRT Sdn Bhd. Construction of the yard commenced in April 2025, with full completion slated for May 2026.

SRS LRT Project Director Adil Putra Ahmad reported that the facility is designed to produce approximately 8,800 SBG segments. “At peak operations, a workforce of 400 personnel will utilize 20 mould sets to produce up to 350 segments per month. We have already successfully cast the first segment,” he noted.

Mr. Adil highlighted that the segmental construction method is specifically chosen to minimize urban disruption. The segments are manufactured off-site and transported to the alignment for installation. To further ensure public safety and mitigate traffic congestion, launching activities in high-traffic areas will be conducted primarily at night.

The site visit was attended by several high-ranking officials, including State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari, State Secretary Dato’ Seri Zulkifli Long, and Seberang Perai City Council Mayor Dato’ Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, alongside representatives from the Penang Island City Council and SRS LRT.
