Veteran Broadcast Journalist Karam Singh Walia Passes Away at 67

KLANG –6th  April 26 Karam Singh Walia, a distinguished figure in Malaysian broadcast journalism, passed away at his residence here at 3:30 a.m. today. He was 67 years old.The news of his passing was confirmed by his younger brother, Jasbant Singh, who serves as the Group Managing Editor of News and Current Affairs at Media Prima Bhd.

 

Karam Singh Walia was a household name during the 1990s and 2000s, primarily recognized for his tenure as a news anchor and investigative reporter for TV3’s flagship program, Buletin Utama. Throughout his career, he became synonymous with fearless reporting and a signature style that resonated with viewers across the nation.

 

Widely regarded as Malaysia’s preeminent environmental journalist, Karam was celebrated for his bold and high-impact special reports. His work frequently brought critical attention to pressing issues such as industrial pollution, public safety, and environmental sustainability, often holding authorities and corporations accountable.

 

His excellence in the field was recognized with numerous accolades. He was a four-time winner of the “Best Environmental Television Journalist” title at the Malaysia Press Institute (MPI) Awards, clinching the honor consecutively from 2004 to 2007. Additionally, he was a two-time recipient of the prestigious “Best TV Journalist” award at the Anugerah Seri Angkasa.

 

In recent years, Karam had been battling health complications related to liver and kidney disease.Tributes have begun pouring in from the media fraternity and government officials. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil extended his deepest condolences to the family, noting that the veteran newsman made significant and lasting contributions to the Malaysian broadcasting industry.

 

Karam Singh Walia leaves behind a legacy of integrity and investigative rigor that continues to inspire the next generation of Malaysian journalists.
