TIRUVANNAMALAI India, Dec 29 (2025) — The temple town of Tiruvannamalai is grappling with an unprecedented surge in pilgrim numbers during the final week of 2025, with wait times for free darshan at the historic Arunachaleswarar Temple crossing the 8-hour mark on Monday morning.

 

Authorities from the district administration and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department have issued an urgent advisory, noting that some devotees reported waits of up to 10–12 hours during peak afternoon sessions (10:00 AM to 6:00 PM).

 

RUSH DRIVEN BY THREE KEY FACTORS

 

The influx is attributed to a confluence of events: a large number of South Indian devotees — particularly from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — visiting to seek New Year (2026) blessings; ongoing winter school holidays leading to family travel; and a post-Karthigai Deepam rush, with those who missed the early December festival arriving to witness rituals tied to the continuing Maha Deepam flame.

 

ADMINISTRATION RAMP UP SAFETY MEASURES

 

To manage crowds and prevent untoward incidents, the Tiruvannamalai District Police have deployed additional personnel at bottleneck points near the East Rajagopuram. A newly implemented AI-based surveillance system is monitoring crowd density at entry and exit gates to mitigate stampede risks.

 

A no-fly zone remains in effect across the district on Monday, instituted following a recent high-profile visit by the Chief Minister. Medical camps have also been set up along queue lines to assist devotees suffering from exhaustion or dehydration.

 

GUIDELINES FOR PILGRIMS

 

The administration has advised the elderly and those with young children to avoid peak hours. While ₹50 special entry tickets are available, their queue wait time is still estimated at 4–5 hours. Heavy crowds are expected to persist and peak again on January 2, 2026, for the first Pournami (Full Moon) of the new year.

 

Devotees have been urged to carry sufficient water and dry snacks, as movement within the barricaded queue system is highly restricted.
