Ayodhya Tightens Food Curbs: Non-Veg Delivery Banned Within 15 km of Ram Temple; Hotels, Vendors Warned

11Jan26 AYODHYA: The Ayodhya district administration has imposed a ban on the delivery of non-vegetarian food within a 15-kilometre radius of the Ram temple, citing complaints over online food platforms supplying non-veg items in the sacred town.

According to officials, the restricted zone falls under the paanch kosi parikrama area, a religious circuit of significance to devotees. The decision follows reports that non-vegetarian food continued to be delivered to tourists despite an earlier prohibition.

Ayodhya Assistant Food Commissioner Manik Chandra Singh said complaints were received against food delivery companies and hospitality establishments violating existing norms. “We received complaints that, despite a previously imposed ban, non-vegetarian food was being served to tourists through online orders. Following this, a ban was imposed on online non-vegetarian deliveries as well,” he said.

He added that strict instructions have been issued to hotels, homestays, shopkeepers and food delivery platforms, warning them against serving or supplying non-vegetarian food and alcoholic beverages within the prohibited zone. “All hotels, shopkeepers and delivery companies have been informed of the ban order. Continuous monitoring will be carried out by the administration to ensure compliance,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, concerns remain over the continued operation of liquor outlets along Ram Path. More than two dozen licensed liquor shops are still functioning along the 14-kilometre stretch, despite a resolution passed by the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation (AMC) in May last year to prohibit the sale of liquor and meat in the area.

An AMC official said efforts had been made to remove meat shops, including those in parts of Faizabad city, but action against liquor outlets requires approval from the district administration. “For removing liquor shops from Ram Path, we have to take permission from the district administration,” the official said.

The latest enforcement drive comes in the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent remarks at a Ram temple event, where he said Ayodhya had faced conspiracies in the past but that Sanatan traditions ultimately prevailed.
