GEORGE TOWN (4 March 2026) –

Thousands of visitors gathered at the historic Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama) yesterday evening to celebrate Chap Goh Meh, marking a vibrant conclusion to the 15-day Chinese New Year festivities.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Penang Island, Dato’ Ir. Rajendran P. Anthony, accompanied by his wife, Datin Devika S. Thiagarajan, and members of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). Led by YB Wong Hon Wai, the State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, the celebration highlighted Penang’s unique position as a hub for cultural heritage.

Under the theme "Powerful Horse Welcoming Chap Goh Meh," the Esplanade was transformed into a sea of people. Despite being a working day, the atmosphere remained electric as locals and tourists alike joined the traditional celebrations.

In his address, YB Wong Hon Wai emphasised the cultural significance of the festival, particularly the famous orange-tossing tradition inherited from the Baba Nyonya community. He noted that this year’s celebration was especially meaningful as the Esplanade’s seawall and walkway recently received two prestigious international recognitions.

"Today, we continue a tradition that symbolises hope and romance, as well as Penang's cultural identity," Mr Wong stated. "It is even more special to celebrate this at a world-recognised location that blends local colour with international standards."

The evening featured a diverse array of performances, including traditional Chinese music, Sichuan "Face Changing" acts, and high-pole lion dances. The crowd was also entertained by New Year songs, firecrackers, and an energetic LED flag drum performance.

The opening ceremony commenced with a spirited dance by primary school students, followed by a musical fusion of East and West. The highlight of the night was the traditional orange-tossing ceremony, where participants gathered by the shoreline to throw oranges into the sea—a symbolic gesture for seeking good fortune and soulmates.

The festivities also showcased Penang’s multicultural spirit through a Dondang Sayang performance, which combined Baba Nyonya traditions with modern choreography. This was followed by cross-cultural displays from local dance studios, reflecting the state’s artistic diversity.

The 15-day Chinese New Year celebrations concluded with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the night sky. The event once again proved that Penang remains a living heartbeat of cultural heritage, where traditions continue to thrive and be celebrated by all.
