31 May 2026, GEORGE TOWN – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Tanjong Member of Parliament Lim Hui Ying rushed to Penang Road tonight immediately upon receiving news of a fire breaking out at Midnight Black, the entertainment venue formerly known as the historic Odeon Theatre.

Arriving at the scene to assess the situation firsthand, Chief Minister Chow received a full briefing from emergency authorities and fire officials. He was informed that the Fire and Rescue Department teams responded swiftly, containing and bringing the blaze under control within a short time. Their rapid action successfully stopped the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings, including premises along nearby Sri Bahari Road, preventing what could have been a far worse tragedy.

However, the Fire and Rescue Department has officially confirmed one fatality in the incident so far.

According to information received, the venue was not yet in operation at the time the fire started. Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire, as well as the full extent of property damage and losses incurred.

Chief Minister Chow expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, saying: “I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

He also praised the bravery and efficiency of the emergency services: “At the same time, I want to convey my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all firefighters, rescue personnel, and emergency responders. Your professionalism, speed, and dedication were crucial in protecting nearby residents, businesses, and properties from further harm. You have done an excellent job keeping our community safe.”

Investigations by the Fire and Rescue Department are continuing. ??
